Props and stabilizers

How to Select Adjustable Steel Prop Sizes

An adjustable steel prop should be selected from the required working height and the complete temporary-support design—not from the size number alone. Several prop ranges overlap, which can be useful during planning, but the final choice also depends on extension, load, spacing, end conditions, bracing, condition and the approved arrangement.

Vidaform’s verified catalogue lists six principal adjustable prop size ranges from Size 0 to Size 5. The same category also contains accessories and stabilizers, so the exact product code is essential when preparing an enquiry.

These ranges are catalogue dimensions. They are not safe-load tables and do not by themselves confirm suitability for a project.

Step 1: establish the real working height

Start with the vertical distance between the approved lower and upper bearing points. Do not use only the floor-to-soffit dimension if additional heads, base components, beams or other interface pieces occupy part of the support height.

Record minimum and maximum conditions across the work area. Slabs, steps, drops and uneven support levels can create more than one required prop length.

Step 2: identify the prop ranges that contain that height

Compare the required working height with the six verified ranges. Because some ranges overlap, more than one size may physically reach the same height.

For example, a required height inside an overlap does not automatically mean that either prop is equally suitable. The project engineer must consider how far each prop is extended and what capacity and restraint apply at that extension.

Step 3: check the engineering conditions

Before confirming the product code, check:

  • Design load assigned to each prop
  • Prop spacing and supported-member layout
  • Actual extension within the product range
  • Upper and lower bearing details
  • Vertical alignment and eccentricity
  • Required bracing or restraint
  • Construction sequence and potential load changes
  • Condition and inspection status of the component
  • The applicable project specification and approved load information

Vidaform’s public catalogue intentionally does not state unverified load capacities. Capacity must therefore come from the approved technical information used for the project, not from the size-range table above.

Step 4: select compatible heads and stability components

A prop schedule may also require a defined top interface or stability accessory. Vidaform lists the following separate products within the same category:

These accessories must be selected for their intended function and compatibility. A tripod or head does not replace the need for an approved stability and bracing arrangement.

Adjustable props versus stabilizers

The Props and stabilizers category also contains short, long and heavy-duty stabilizer products. These are different coded families and should not be counted as interchangeable adjustable props.

Examples include:

Always schedule the exact family and code shown in the approved arrangement.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Confirm lower and upper bearing levels.
  2. Deduct the depth of approved interface components.
  3. Determine the required prop working height at every level condition.
  4. Identify the catalogue ranges that contain that height.
  5. Check extension-dependent capacity using approved project information.
  6. Confirm heads, bases, restraint and bracing.
  7. Inspect component condition before use.
  8. Prepare quantities using exact Vidaform codes.
  9. Send the coded list through WhatsApp for quotation and review.

Start with the verified range table

Use the dedicated Adjustable steel props in Egypt page to review the verified product family. Then open the selected products, add preliminary quantities and send the structured enquiry through WhatsApp. Final use remains subject to the project’s engineering review and site controls.
